Topic: Important Legal Documents You Need – Other Elder Law Issues
Speaker:
Teresa S. Player
Teresa will present an overview of the documents that people need to consider - wills, durable powers of attorney, trusts, healthcare powers of attorney, and living wills. This presentation will be applicable to those who already have these documents in place, as well as those who don't have everything in place yet. This will be a very general overview; everyone is strongly encouraged to consult with your own attorney or find one conversant with elder law, as everyone's situation is unique. Teresa will also touch on some other elder law issues.
Teresa S. Player practices law in the Columbia area. She has worked in state and federal government as well as private practice. In addition to her experience as an attorney, Ms. Player has experience with nonprofits, especially in the area of community outreach. Teresa is a graduate of the University of South Carolina and the University of South Carolina School of Law.

Topic: Parkinson's Disease (PD) Psychosis Education and Awareness
Speaker: Tim Jiannuzzi
We will discuss what PD Psychosis is, what the symptoms look like, and the impact it can have on patients and caregivers. Hallucinations and Delusions are common, non-motor symptoms of PD. Over 50% of patients with PD will develop hallucinations and/or delusions over the course of their disease. Despite the high incidence, these hallucinations and delusions go widely unrecognized and under reported. Unrecognized: Only around 5% of patients and caregivers are aware that hallucinations and delusions may be related to PD. Under reported: Only around 10% - 20% of patients with PD hallucinations and delusions pro-actively report symptoms to their physicians. Tim will be presenting information on the medication NUPLAZID® (pimavanserin) is the first and only medication approved by the U.S. Food and Drug Administration (FDA) for the treatment of hallucinations and delusions associated with Parkinson's disease psychosis.

South Carolina Department On Aging - Family Caregiver Support
Over 770,000 family caregivers in South Carolina provide 737 million hours of 'free' services to their chronically ill, disabled, or frail elderly loved ones each year. If their services had to be replaced by care workers paid $10.04 per hour, the cost would be almost $7.4 billion each year.
Looking for help? If you are a senior or caregiver looking for services, please visit our resource site GetCareSC.com. This page describes the programs our state agency supports, but most programs in South Carolina vary by county. At GetCareSC.com, you can use your zip code to find local programs and services near you.

MEETING
|
Topic: Open Forum
For our open forum meetings, we usually start with a theme or topic and go from there. Our members have an opportunity to share their own experiences; ask questions of each other; and help each other by proving solutions that they have for various issues, concerns, problems, etc. At the open forum meetings, our members tell us they learn about things that they can't find in anywhere else, because they are learning directly from other Parkinson patients and their caregivers. These meetings are one of our most popular, and sometimes they get a little bit noisy because everyone wants to share!
