SUMMARY:Meeting | Topics: 1)Medtronic Leading The Way In DBS - Speaker: Michelle Morton Reed 2)Demonstration - Parkinson's & Movement Disorders Exercise Class - Presenters: Jessica Bacon\, Annette Francis\, Nancy Maxfield
DESCRIPTION:MEDTRONIC – LEADING THE WAY IN DBS  \nFor the one million people diagnosed with Parkinson’s disease in the United States\, Medtronic\, a global leader in healthcare technology\, proudly announces FDA approval of BrainSense™ Adaptive deep brain stimulation (aDBS) and BrainSense™ Electrode Identifier (EI).  \nDeep brain stimulation (DBS) has been transforming the lives of people with Parkinson’s and other neurological disorders for more than 30 years. DBS is similar to a cardiac pacemaker\, but for the brain. It uses a surgically implanted neurostimulator via a minimally invasive procedure to transmit electrical signals to specific parts of the brain affected by debilitating neurological disorders. Now Medtronic has enhanced its Percept™ DBS neurostimulators with exclusive BrainSense™ Adaptive technology\, introducing aDBS for people living with Parkinson’s. This feature personalizes therapy based on a patient’s brain activity in real time – both in clinical settings and in daily life2. It provides enhanced therapy personalization for symptom control that automatically adjusts\, minimizing the need for patients to manually adjust stimulation.  \n“Medtronic is the only company in the world to offer an adaptive DBS system that dynamically adjusts therapy in real time. This new era in Parkinson’s care represents more than a decade of intentional innovation ushering in personalized neuromodulation at scale that responds to a patient’s changing needs\, equipping clinicians with unparalleled insights\, and setting a new standard for DBS therapy.”  \nContact: 710 Medtronic Parkway \,Minneapolis\, MN 55432-5640 \nTelephone: (800) 633-8766 \nwww.medtronicdbs.com  \n \nSpeaker: Michelle Morton Reed \nMichelle Morton Reed is a Senior Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS) Therapy Expert at Medtronic\, with a Bachelor of Science in Exercise Science from the University of Texas at Arlington. Since 1999\, Michelle has worked in the medical field in both clinical and commercial capacities\, bringing over two decades of experience to her current role. She remains deeply committed to patient care and continues to find fulfillment in her daily interactions with individuals living with Parkinson’s disease. \nMichelle is the proud mother of two children. \n“My purpose is to make a meaningful impact in the lives of others. Working closely with Parkinson’s patients has shown me their strength\, humility\, and resilience. Nothing brings me more joy than knowing I’ve helped improve someone’s day even in the smallest way. For me\, every patient interaction is a chance to make a difference and live out my calling.” \n________________________________________________________________________________________________________ \nDemonstration – Parkinson’s & Movement Disorders Exercise Class – Tuesdays & Thursdays 9:30 AM to 10:15 AM \nThis class is designed for individuals with Parkinson’s and other movement disorders\, but is also open to caregivers\, those recovering from surgery\, and anyone seeking a low-intensity workout. Tai Chi is included in every session to support balance\, mobility\, and relaxation. Led by a certified instructor\, each class includes:  \nStrength and flexibility\nBalance and coordination\nLight cardio\nCognitive exercises\nOccasional line dancing for added fun  \nMove at your own pace in a supportive environment\, where a welcoming community and strong camaraderie come with every class. Open to YMCA members. Scholarships available. Visit the front desk to learn more.    \nClass held at the Downtown YMCA\, 1447 Hampton St. Columbia\, SC 29201 (803) 799-9187 \nPresenters: Jessica Bacon\, Executive Director of the Downtown YMCA\nAnnette Francis and Nancy Maxfield\, Class Members

SUMMARY:Meeting | Topics: 1)Updates in Movement Disorders/Parkinson's Disease Research at MUSC - Speaker: Dr. Christine Cooper 2) Rock Steady Boxing Presentation
DESCRIPTION:Updates in Movement Disorders/Parkinson’s Disease Research at MUSC \nOur main speaker will be Dr. Christine Cooper. Dr. Cooper is an Associate Professor of Neurology and Movement Disorders specialist at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC). At MUSC\, she is the director of the department’s Clinical Trials Unit\, which focuses on bringing the latest\, cutting-edge industry-sponsored research to South Carolina patients. Her own investigator-initiated research focuses on using neuroimaging and non-invasive brain stimulation devices to better understand and investigate Movement Disorders.  \nDr. Cooper received her medical degree from the University of Florida with honors in Clinical Research. She went on to complete her neurology residency at Beth Israel Deaconess Medical Center/Harvard University\, followed by a fellowship in movement disorders at Pennsylvania Hospital/University of Pennsylvania. Dr. Cooper treats adult patients with Parkinson’s disease\, tremor\, dystonia\, dyskinesia\, ataxia\, tics\, and chorea. As part of the treatments offered\, Dr. Cooper performs botulinum toxin injections for movement disorders patients with dystonia and hemifacial spasm. She provides pre-surgical evaluations for deep brain stimulation and post-surgical programming for Parkinson’s disease\, tremor\, and dystonia. \nWe will discuss ongoing and upcoming research for Parkinson’s disease and Movement Disorders at MUSC and nationally. \nResearch participation can vary from observational studies\, to new medications and therapies. \nWe will discuss current research opportunities and how to get in touch with our research team. \n____________________________________________________________________________________________________ \nBrief Presentation: Rock Steady Boxing \nPresenters: Rock Steady Boxing Irmo\n3541 Dreher Shoals Road\nIrmo\, SC 29063\nTel. # (803) 575-0549 \nRock Steady Boxing is a non-contact boxing program designed specifically for people with Parkinson’s disease. It aims to improve quality of life through exercises that enhance balance\, strength\, agility\, and overall fitness. Rock Steady Boxing is not just boxing\, it is specifically designed to address Parkinson’s symptoms such as slow or small movements\, imbalance\, stiffness\, flexed posture\, and respiratory weakness. Our scientifically based curriculum can be adapted to any level of Parkinson’s.
