SUMMARY:Meeting | Open Forum
DESCRIPTION:Our July 20\, 2025 Meeting Is An Open Forum Meeting \nParkinson’s (PD) patients newly diagnosed (5 years or less) will be seated with PD patients who have more than 5 years of PD experience. Any guest (care partner\, family member\, neighbor\, etc.) will also be seated with their PD patient. Anyone who is only interested in learning about PD will be scattered among the tables. \nTo help us match attendees of different years of PD experience\, when you sign in at the door\, you will be asked one of the following questions:\nAre you a PD patient diagnosed 5 years or less?\nAre you a PD patient diagnosed more than 5 years ago?\nAre you not a patient or care partner\, but just interested in learning about PD? \nBased on your answer\, we will give you slip of colored paper. By using the paper colors\, one of our volunteers will seat you and your guests at a table. \nWe understand that sitting at a table with strangers discussing personal topics may be uncomfortable\, but please keep in mind that everyone at this meeting has an interest in learning how to live successfully with Parkinson’s. \nTo help start the table discussions\, we will provide a list of topics and questions\, and each table can choose from the list. \nAll PD patients will have an opportunity to share their own experiences of living with PD. They can share what works and what hasn’t worked. They can ask questions related to PD life. They can help each other\, by sharing solutions they used for any issues\, concerns\, problems\, etc. We encourage everyone to tell what has helped them. Sometimes\, even less experienced patients may have learned a new trick and/or technique for solving problems that an experienced patient may not know about. Caregivers/guests also have an opportunity to participate and contribute to these discussions. \nOur Open Forum meetings have been one of our most popular meetings because our support group members tell us they learn about PD things that they cannot find anywhere else. They learn information directly from other PD patients and their care partners about living with Parkinson’s. \nImportant – Please note that any private or personal information discussed at each table is not to be shared elsewhere! \nWe look forward to having you joining us and participating at our Open Forum! \n

He had DBS surgery in 2009. Even with DBS\, living with PD still brings new challenges every day so Kay is always seeking solutions to help both of them. Kay marvels at resources available to patients and caregivers today that were non-existent when they began their journey. Kay feels volunteering with the CPSG over the years has taught her so much about her role as a caregiver. \nKay and Bill began attending the Columbia Parkinson’s Group (CPSG) soon after he was diagnosed with PD. At that time\, CPSG was a three year old very loosely organized group. Being so much younger than the others in the group Kay was nudged into stepping up to assist another wife\, whose husband also had young onset\, in leading the group. Kay is so thankful for so many others\, bringing broad experiences\, who have stepped up over the years working tirelessly to make CPSG the legal 501.c organization it is today. Kay especially appreciates providers who recognize what CPSG has to offer and encourage their patients to become involved. \nChris Maynard – Person with Parkinson’s – Chris will return for the afternoon session. \n  \n

SUMMARY:Meeting | Topic: “Ongentys: Optimizing Your Parkinson’s Disease Treatment” | Speaker: John K. Baker\, MD
DESCRIPTION:Dr. Baker practices in Sumter\, SC and Camden\, SC\, and currently is with Colonial Neurology\, part of Colonial Family Practice/Healthcare Neurologist\, as well as the Medical Director/Supervising Physician with Colonial Aesthetics\, and the South Carolina Medical Director/Supervising Physician with Palmetto Diagnostics.\nHe graduated cum laude with honors from the South Carolina Honors College at the University of South Carolina with a BS Biology and then went on to earn his MD at the University of South Carolina Medical School. He completed his internship and residency at Duke University Medical Center. He holds significant medical licensures and board certifications in several neurological subspecialties\, and serves on several committees.\nTopic – “Ongentys: Optimizing Your Parkinson’s Disease Treatment”\nOngentys is a COMT inhibitor. COMT inhibitors can help when levodopa is not working for long enough and starts to wear off between doses. They can help to reduce your ‘off’ time\, when you have more trouble with your Parkinson’s symptoms\, and increase the amount of ‘on’ time\, when your symptoms are more controlled.\nQuick Facts:\nCatechol-O-methyl transferase (COMT) is a body enzyme. When a person takes levodopa\, COMT can deactivate levodopa before it enters the brain and central nervous system; COMT inhibitors prevent this from happening.\nCOMT inhibitors are most effective when used in combination with levodopa to extend “on” time.\nDr. Baker will also discuss several Parkinson’s medications in general.
