Some of us\nmight be squeamish about thinking of donating our brains for scientific research. Please\ncome to this meeting and get your questions answered so that you understand\nhow important this research is – and the decision-making process\, as well as what\nhappens if you decide to help in this important research.\nThe presentation will also cover some of the research into Alzheimer’s Disease that the\nSC-ADRC is conducting. \nThe April 19\, 2026 meeting will be a very robust and important program from the\nBrain Bank – the South Carolina-Alzheimer’s Disease Research Center (SC-ADRC)\,\nwhich is a joint effort between MUSC\, Clemson University and the University of South\nCarolina. DESCRIPTION:The Columbia Parkinson’s Support Group has a long tradition of welcoming everyone to our Holiday/Christmas Party instead of having a regular meeting in December. This year the event will be on December 21st\, our normal meeting day\, from 3 PM to 5 PM\, in the Auditorium at Lexington Medical Park I\, our normal meeting location. \nWe will enjoy music and refreshments – cookies\, warm apple cider\, hot chocolate\, bottled water\, and candies. DESCRIPTION:Topic: Deep Brain Stimulation and Focused Ultrasound \n\nHow do I know if I need DBS or Focused Ultrasound?\nHow is DBS different from Focused Ultrasound?\nHow to decide between DBS and Focused Ultrasound?\nWhat should I expect in a DBS/FUS evaluation?\nWhat is the screening process like?\nWhat is the surgery like?\nWhat are other non-surgical options?\n\nSpeakers:\nDr. Gonzalvo Revuelta\, DO\, MS\, is Professor of Neurology\, and SmartState Endowed Chair in Neurodegenerative Disorders at the Medical University of South Carolina. Dr. Revuelta also directs the Murray Center for Research In Parkinson’s Disease and Related Disorders and is the Medical Director of the Deep Brain Stimulation Program. His NIH funded research program focuses on the development of invasive and non-invasive neuromodulation interventions for Parkinson’s disease and related disorders. He has a DO in medicine from the School of Osteopathic Medicine at the University of Medicine and Dentistry of New Jersey. He completed a residency in neurology at Drexel University College of Medicine in Philadelphia and a fellowship in movement disorders at Emory University in Atlanta. His primary research focus is the development of neuromodulation therapies for freezing of gait (FOG) in patients with Parkinson’s disease (PD).\nDr. Nathan C. Rowland\, MD\, PhD\, FAANS\, FACS\, is a neurosurgeon and Associate Professor at the Medical University of South Carolina (MUSC)\, serving in the Departments of Neurosurgery\, Neurology\, and Health Sciences Research. He is Executive Director of the MUSC Institute for Neuroscience Discovery\, Associate Director of the Neurosurgical Residency Program\, and Co-Surgical Director of the Movement Disorders and Gamma Knife Programs. Nationally\, he chairs the Diversity\, Equity\, and Inclusion Committee of the American Society of Stereotactic and Functional Neurosurgeons and consults for global partners. A Morehouse College graduate\, Dr. Rowland earned his MD and PhD from Emory\, trained at UCSF and UC Berkeley\, and completed a fellowship in functional neurosurgery at the University of Toronto. His research focuses on motor control in Parkinson’s disease and stroke recovery. A dedicated mentor\, he has received multiple grants and presented at major international and national conferences on neurosurgery and stroke.

As a longtime resident of Columbia\, Ramona is an expert on senior care options in our area. This will not be structured\, like our Open Forum meetings\, it will simply be an opportunity for anyone who wishes to get together and talk about anything related to Parkinson’s Disease.\nWe are very pleased to also let everyone know that Dr. Myriam J. Sollman\, from Prisma Health Neurosurgery\, has volunteered to join us that day.\nDr. Sollman is a board-certified clinical neuropsychologist who specializes in aging and movement disorders. She obtained her doctorate from the University of Kentucky\, completed a residency at the University of Florida\, and postdoctoral fellowship at the Barrow Neurological Institute\, which houses the Muhammad Ali Parkinson’s Center. She joined us here in Columbia 2017 from Wake Forest School of Medicine\, where she built a neuropsychology program. Dr. Sollman’s research interests include movement disorders and memory disorders. She serves as a reviewer for several professional journals and has authored or co-authored many peer-reviewed articles.\nAs a reminder\, our meetings are open to anyone with an interest in Parkinson’s Disease\, and are always free to attend.

Panelists will be: \nDr. John Morgan\nMedical College of Georgia at Augusta University\n1120 15th Street\nAugusta\, Georgia 30912 \nJohn Morgan\, MD\, PhD\, has been in practice as a movement disorders specialist for approximately 20 years and as a memory specialist for approximately 11 years. He is a tenured Professor and the Director of the Movement and Memory Disorders Programs of the Medical College of Georgia at Augusta University. He earned his MD-PhD from the Medical College of Georgia and did a medicine internship and neurology residency at the University of Virginia. He is fellowship-trained in movement disorders and routinely cares for many patients with PD and other disorders. He has extensive experience in clinical trials for PD\, RLS\, Alzheimer’s Disease and other disorders. \nHe has published numerous peer-reviewed publications and book chapters and served on the NIH NET-PD FS-ZONE Steering Committee. He has served as a co-investigator on VA Merit Review Grants studying the effects of niacin and niacinamide in PD. \nOn a personal note\, he grew up in Jacksonville\, Florida and his wife is a dysphagia-expert speech pathologist. He has four children ages 22\, 19\, 12\, and 11. He really enjoys tennis\, hiking\, fishing\, playing the stock market\, movies\, collecting sports cards and comics\, and spending time with family. \nDr. Pradeep Bollu\nPrisma Health Neurology\n1333Taylor Street (at Richland)\, Suite 1C\nColumbia\, SC 29201 \nPradeep Bollu\, MD\, is a graduate of Kurnool Medical College\, India. After receiving his medical degree\, he completed an internship in internal medicine and a residency in neurology at the University of Missouri in Columbia\, Missouri. He then completed his fellowship training in sleep medicine and is board certified in neurology\, sleep medicine\, electromyography and headache medicine. \nDr. Bollu is currently a member and a diplomate of American Academy of Sleep Medicine. Before joining Prisma Health\, he worked as faculty at the University of Missouri\, supervising residents and fellows as the associate program director for the neurology residency and sleep medicine fellowship. He also served as the associate director for sleep disorders center at MU Health Care. He sees a diverse population of patients with neurologic illnesses including chronic migraines\, sleep disorders (sleep apnea\, hypersomnia\, narcolepsy)\, headaches\, spasticity\, dystonia and Parkinson’s disease. \nHe offers comprehensive neurologic care along with many procedural interventions such as botulinum injection therapy (for migraines\, dystonia\, spasticity\, etc.)\, deep brain stimulation (DBS) therapy\, duopa infusion therapy\, nerve blocks for headaches and trigger point injections. \nHe has numerous peer-reviewed articles\, case reports and book chapters. He is the editor of the book Neurochemistry in Clinical Practice\, and he is co-editor of the book Sleep Issues in Neuromuscular Diseases. \nWill Harmon\, DPT\nTrek Physical Therapy and Assistive Applied Sciences\, LLP\n1036 Kinley Rd.\, Irmo\, SC 29063 \nWill is a Doctor of Physical Therapy (DPT)\, and a graduate of the University of South Carolina and the Medical University of South Carolina. He has been practicing physical therapy for more than 25 years. He and his son Kirk\, also a DPT\, own and operate Trek Physical Therapy in Irmo\, SC. In his spare time\, he is a car and truck enthusiast\, a nature lover\, and resides in Lexington County with his faithful companion\, Cap\, an Australian Cattle Dog. \nAfter seeing the challenges faced by a family member diagnosed with Parkinson’s\, Will and his son Kirk\, upon opening their own treatment facility\, made the decision to specialize in providing physical therapy treatment to persons diagnosed with Parkinson’s Disease and other neuromuscular conditions. There are many treatments and techniques available today to make living with Parkinson’s disease easier for both the persons diagnosed\, and their caregivers. Will and Kirk feel it is of vital importance that this information get to those who need it\, and efforts through vocation and volunteerism are two ways to do just that\, and to serve those who have such needs. \nChris Maynard\, Person with Parkinson’s \nChris Maynard is a Process Engineer & Indie Author\, a retired SCANG Veteran\, and a person with Parkinson’s. He is also an enrolled member of the Coharie Tribe of North Carolina. His debut novel “The Demagogue Wars” won Sci-Fi Book of the Year in the 2022 Feed My Reads Awards in the United Kingdom. The story featured a Veteran with Parkinson’s named Malachi. Chris served a total of 15 years in the U.S. Army and USAF before being forced to medically retire due to his Young Onset Parkinson’s Disease diagnosis. He now advocates for Transcranial Magnetic Stimulation (TMS)\, Deep Brain Stimulation (DBS)\, and for Persons with Disabilities in the workplace at his employer\, TD Bank. He currently lives in his hometown of Thomasville\, NC with his wife\, Stephanie\, where he continues to work and write under the pen name\, C. They have four children\, William\, Sarah (Eddy)\, Lily\, and Riley. He has been an avid cyclist for over forty years. He also is the President of the Dutch Fork High School Ladies Lacrosse Booster Club and announces the home games where Lily and Riley currently play on the varsity team. \nFather Doug began his time at St. Francis Of Assisi Episcopal Church in Chapin\, SC as a supply celebrant and is now honored to be called as the Rector of the Parish. \nDr. Ian Glidden\, MD\nPrisma Health\n3 Medical Park Suite 510\nColumbia\, SC 29203 \nDr. Glidden is a board-certified family physician undergoing fellowship training in hospice and palliative medicine. He values the importance of chronic disease management\, evidence-based medicine\, and amelioration of symptom burden in patients with life limiting disease. He received his BS in Biology from University of North Dakota and his MS in Biomedical Science from Iowa State University. Dr. Glidden completed his family medicine residency last year at Self Regional Healthcare in Greenwood\, SC. He is a father of two young children and enjoys watching them grow. \nKay Perricelli – Parkinson’s Care Partner \nKay (age 75) cares for her husband Bill (age 77) in their West Columbia home. He was diagnosed with young onset PD in 1988 at age 40. Bill retired on disability in 1993 and at that time Kay began working part-time until 2011 when Bill could no longer stay home alone. He had DBS surgery in 2009. Even with DBS\, living with PD still brings new challenges every day so Kay is always seeking solutions to help both of them. Kay marvels at resources available to patients and caregivers today that were non-existent when they began their journey. Kay feels volunteering with the CPSG over the years has taught her so much about her role as a caregiver. \nKay and Bill began attending the Columbia Parkinson’s Group (CPSG) soon after he was diagnosed with PD. At that time\, CPSG was a three year old very loosely organized group. Being so much younger than the others in the group Kay was nudged into stepping up to assist another wife\, whose husband also had young onset\, in leading the group. Kay is so thankful for so many others\, bringing broad experiences\, who have stepped up over the years working tirelessly to make CPSG the legal 501.c organization it is today. The first half of class takes place seated\, while the second half of class participants have the choice to stand; all movement has a seated demonstration\, so everyone is able to participate the entire time.\nAll are welcome\, including care partners\, family and friends – even if you do not have Parkinson’s\, this class is helpful for anyone\, including people with limited mobility!

DESCRIPTION:Candy Waites is the founder and president of Seniors on the Move\, the move management specialists\, and is presently serving seniors in the Midlands.\nShe has an extensive career in public service\, among many positions being the president of the League of Women Voters of the Columbia area from 1973 to 1976. In 1976\, she became the first woman elected to Richland County Council where she served for twelve years. In 1988 Waites was elected to the South Carolina House of Representatives and served for three terms. She was instrumental in the passage of legislation dealing with the reform of campaign finances and ethics policy. She also served as Director of Community Leadership Programs at The Leadership Institute\, Columbia College from which she retired in 2010 after a total of 14 years. \nFor our March 16th meeting\, Candy will present on “How to Downsize and Feel Good about it”. Her presentation will focus on why we need to downsize\, we will go through a quiz to help you find what you need to get rid of\, then Candy will give you some “how to” tips. \nCandy Yaghjian Waites has enjoyed moving between the political world and the art world all her life. She has spent her entire career as an advocate for women finding their voices. In her art she focuses on drawing portraits and capturing people\, especially children in poignant moments.\nWaites grew up in Columbia in a home surrounded by the art of her father\, Edmund Yaghjian former head of the USC Art Department and her mother\, Dorothy Candy\, known for her watercolors and pastels. Candy’s work has been in numerous exhibitions over the years\, and she has taught art in the public schools and privately.\nPUBLIC SERVICE: From 1973 to 1976\, Waites served as the president of the League of Women Voters of the Columbia area. She also taught a course at Columbia College on SC Women Impacting Public Policy.\nTwo weeks after retirement she agreed to serve as Executive Director of the SC Gubernatorial Appointments Project with the goal of increasing the number of women in senior level positions in South Carolina government.\nWhen that project was completed\, she found she was still not ready to retire. So she took a new path as a senior move manager in the Midlands\, a service dedicated to helping seniors downsize\, manage and organize their moves to more manageable living spaces. She is the founder and president of Seniors on the Move\, the move management specialists\, and is presently serving seniors in the Midlands. \nEDUCATION: Waites received her BA from Wheaton College\, Norton\, Mass. and her Master in Public Administration from the University of South Carolina. She has two adult daughters.

DESCRIPTION:Two of our Board members\, Joy Kinney and Will Harmon\, will be our speakers.\nJoy Kinney\, MSR CCC-SLP\nJoy Kinney is a Speech-Language Pathologist specializing in the treatment of adults with neurological disorders\, including communication\, swallowing\, and cognitive symptoms of Traumatic Brain Injury\, Stroke\, Parkinson’s\, and the after effects of COVID-19. She treats adult patients\, and has worked in and directed therapy programs in skilled nursing and rehabilitation facilities\, as well as in the settings of home health\, the acute care hospital\, and outpatient therapy. She has presented at the national and state level regarding various treatment techniques\, and she frequently discusses brain health during her treatment sessions.\nMs Kinney is a member of the Board of Directors of the Columbia Parkinson’s Support Group\, and also a member of the American Speech-Language-Hearing Association. She is fully licensed to practice Speech-Language Pathology in the states of South Carolina\, Florida\, and Georgia. Ms Kinney is a 2005 graduate of the Medical University of South Carolina with a Master of Science in Communication Sciences and Disorders\, and a 2003 graduate of Columbia College of South Carolina with a Bachelor of Arts in Speech-Language Pathology. DESCRIPTION:Dr. Baker practices in Sumter\, SC and Camden\, SC\, and currently is with Colonial Neurology\, part of Colonial Family Practice/Healthcare Neurologist\, as well as the Medical Director/Supervising Physician with Colonial Aesthetics\, and the South Carolina Medical Director/Supervising Physician with Palmetto Diagnostics.\nHe graduated cum laude with honors from the South Carolina Honors College at the University of South Carolina with a BS Biology and then went on to earn his MD at the University of South Carolina Medical School. He completed his internship and residency at Duke University Medical Center. He holds significant medical licensures and board certifications in several neurological subspecialties\, and serves on several committees.\nTopic – “Ongentys: Optimizing Your Parkinson’s Disease Treatment”\nOngentys is a COMT inhibitor. COMT inhibitors can help when levodopa is not working for long enough and starts to wear off between doses. They can help to reduce your ‘off’ time\, when you have more trouble with your Parkinson’s symptoms\, and increase the amount of ‘on’ time\, when your symptoms are more controlled.\nQuick Facts:\nCatechol-O-methyl transferase (COMT) is a body enzyme. When a person takes levodopa\, COMT can deactivate levodopa before it enters the brain and central nervous system; COMT inhibitors prevent this from happening.\nCOMT inhibitors are most effective when used in combination with levodopa to extend “on” time.\nDr. Baker will also discuss several Parkinson’s medications in general.
